Motorcycle Maintenance

Tighting, Cleaning and Lubing a Chain

I get measurements under side.  But I did it from the top as well.  I think we measured a dozen times. After we take off the Chain guard.

My dad's chain was out by 10 cm. It needed to be tighten.  I think it has to be in between 30mm and 50mm.

Basically by the foot peg on the outside of the chain push them together then pull them apart and those measurements should be between 30mm-50mm.

Our chain was 19 1/2 cm and 9 1/2cm.  So basically 100 mm or πŸ’― mm off.

In told it was all my useπŸ˜€

I've had lots of fun with it, but the chain kept falling off and I would have to put it back on. Lucky it never broke but buy another one if it did.

I've been saying the chain needs tighting for awhile and since the chain falling off just stored it in my garage til it was my dad week to drive it. Then we got together ☺️ to do maintenance on it.

We tighten it up to 35mm difference from loose to tight.

A bit on the tight side, but one notch up or down was either 50mm or 35mm.

So we took the smaller one.  I noticed right away how responsive the transfer of gears was.  Way better.  It changed gears way better.  The improvement was remarkable.

Moving it up a notch with a rubber mallet

We toques it to 65 lbs.

First we hosed the motorcycle 🏍️ down.  Then used spray nine to clean it.  Then wiped that off then lubed it and wiped that off.

It's better I hear not to use a pressure washer to break the seal on the motorcycle chain.  Since there's grease in it and doesn't need to be lubed there.  On the outside it does need lube to keep the seals in good condition.

After we were cleaning, tighten, and lube  a Chain, my dad goes takes it for its first ride. No helmet, in sandals, and goes around the block.

I go for quite a ride over the Westside, trying to get the extra lube off so it doesn't drip on the driveway.

We did wipe the cleaning grade off it and wipe the extra oil off it πŸ™‚ with a rag.  Not to sure about the grease cleaner on a chain but that's what we did. Wiped it if then hosed it off.  Then lubed it with motor cross Chain oil.  Looks clean

Made a fun day. We even loosened the back drum brake cable so it would be in-between 20mm-30mm.

Another post is going to be on a oil change for it.

The start of Shenton Creation's

This 2021 we are starting, A new endeavour.  A project that has been talked about for the new year is Kim and my time crocheting, so wood projects and treats we make for our dog.   Hopefully this is the start of an encouraging way to discover new ways into our friends, family and ourselves in a journey with a project, this will commemorating our first blog together, one I have been asking Kim to start for some time.  Hopefully to have more enthusiasm to keep up with our little knickknacks and novelties. To make trinkets in out time and share these moments of thought together bringing about well-spent time jointly. Next post will be on the afghan that I have been working together and could be done on a solid color or two colors of picking. The suspense of this afghan is squares, with white trim. Here part of it set on a chair. Kim is working on a pink one that I will work on the trim as soon as we have enough squares.    Over the holidays πŸŽ„ πŸŽ… w...
